Adding Some Dimension

I scored more out dated wallpaper samples a few weeks ago at Zerolandfill Akron and decided to play around with some new shapes and dimension. I was looking through some photos I took over the summer and was inspired by fungus on a tree. This was one of the days that I wish I had left one wall in my house white. Maybe that will be a spring project.

Dimension in Green – out dated wallpaper samples & scrap wood

UrbanUpcyle

A temporary pop-up display shop is going up this weekend as part of the St Clair Superior Community Development Corporation Slovenian’s Winter Fest and the Cleveland Flea. I will have 2 pieces on display. Fingers crossed that UrbanUpcycle receives grant funding!

Straight Lines

I’m still experimenting with the oodles of out dated wallpaper samples that I’ve accumulated. This new year has me thinking of simplicity. I’ve made several that are lines of different shades of the same color.

These small 6″ x 6″ pieces were created for the Rochester Contemporary Art Center annual small piece exhibition and fundraiser sale.

All of the submitted artwork will be for view on the website beginning May 24, 2013 with all pieces being available for purchase for $20 (plus shipping). It’s a fun way to add to your art collection.

Can’t wait to see all of the art submitted for this years show. I believe last year there were over 5,000 pieces! Definitely something for everyone.

Some like it not

Some artists do not like themed calls for art because they can be limiting. Sometimes they give me an inspirational push while other times I sit and stare for hours and come up with nada. I’m currently in the latter category for a Valentine’s themed show. I’m working on some ideas, but so far nothing has jumped out at me. So while I let the ideas for that show stew I found a neat call for art to participate in.

Artist Trading Cards are mini 2D art the size of a baseball card. I’ve never created an type of non-jewelry artwork that small. I scaled down a technique that I’ve been using  with my beloved wallpaper samples and like the results. I don’t know if I’ll make anymore, but it was a nice challenge to get me back into a creative mode. I made 9 mini art works and in return I will receive 9 pieces back from different artists. I’m curious to see what arrives in the mail next month and will post photos.

37 Days

I have the honor of being part of a great group show 37 Days: Ephemeral Sculpture Curated by Don Parsisson running through November 3, 2012. This is not your traditional “wall hung” show. There are interactive pieces along with free standing sculptures. Don did an excellent job curating the show by creating a room full of unexpected art. The Akron Beacon Journal has a review of the show here.

My piece (titled “and then it struck”) is a freestanding 7.5″ tall whirlwind created using hand-cut (1000+) circles from the stock market listings in the newspaper sewn together and mounted on a wood and wire armature. When the show closes it will be dismantled and recycled; never to be shown again.

A Dash of Green

I received a very pleasant surprise at the 19th annual Art in the Park show in Kent this past weekend; an Honorable mention for my work in the show.  How did they know that green is my favorite color? The show is sponsored by the Kent Parks and Recreation Department and is in the lovely (and very hilly) Fred Fuller park in Kent, OH. The Parks employees were great along with my fellow artists that I had a chance to meet. I am looking forward to next years event.

New Work

I have been very inspired lately (which is a good thing!) and have been creating a lot of new pieces. My concentration has been on art pieces with a few jewelry pieces thrown in. Here are a few of my newly completed works.

More Art and Jewelry to come soon.

New for 2012

I dug out my flame working torch, dusted it off and have been enjoying to new pieces it has helped me create.

The circles were a big hit at the Avant-Garde Winter show. I’m hoping to have an art piece using the circles completed soon.

2012 Here I Come!

Now that I’ve taken a breather from a busy holiday season; 2012 better watch out! I am going to go boldly and confidently into to the world and pursue my art with abandon. New techniques and materials to compliment my glass work are being explored. I hope to have my art displayed in new galleries and boutiques this year as well. Time to expand on my successes of 2011 and learn form my mistakes.

Is it really almost December?

I’m still trying to figure out where the past month has gone. Spending many hours in the basement with my kiln and a hundred glass bottles could be what happened to at least some of it.

Many of the Galleries and Shops that I have pieces in are up and raring! I’ve had a chance to stop by all of the locations and am honored to be showing my work with such talented artists.

It’s a bit of a long drive (at least and hour from Akron), but the Holden Arboretum Gifts from the Heart Holiday shop has a great mix of nature inspired gifts for everyone. There is natural soaps, alpaca fur hats, pottery, ink prints, my jewelry and more.

The Unconventional Christmas Trees at Hazel Tree Interiors are great! Everything from bottle caps, old school rulers and rusty wrenches have been used.

The Collective Upcycle Pop-Up in Shaker Square is a must see. There are over 30 artists/craftpersons displaying their work in a vacant store front. It used to be a high end liquor store and has beautiful wood shelves that were just dying to have displays.

I’ll be at The Log Cabin Gallery on Sunday December 11th from 11am – 5pm  to meet people, talk about my art and admire the work of other artists at the cabin. It really is a jewel box so please stop by while you can. The show runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday through December 18th.

Finally, the last big event for the year will be The Holiday Mart and the Akron Art Museum. Join me Thursday the 8th from 5 – 9pm for live music and great art from 9 local artists. I’m still pinching myself and can’t believe that I was invited to be a part of this event. It should be a great evening and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for decent weather.
